Kansas City Current Locks in Superstar Temwa Chawinga with New Multi-Year Deal

Thursday, January 30, 2025

The Kansas City Current has locked in forward Temwa Chawinga for the long haul, signing the 2024 NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner to a three-year contract extension, ensuring she stays with the club through the 2028 season. The announcement reinforces the team’s commitment to keeping one of the league’s most electrifying talents in Kansas City.

“Securing Temwa’s long-term future in Kansas City was a significant priority this offseason,” said general manager Caitlin Carducci. “She had an amazing debut season, but both Temwa and our club feel that we are just getting started in reaching our potential together. We’re excited to see her wearing the Current crest for years to come.”

Previously under contract through 2025, Chawinga delivered a historic 2024 season, rewriting the NWSL record books in her debut campaign. She became the first player in league history to net 20 goals in a single season, score in eight consecutive regular-season matches, and find the back of the net against all 13 NWSL opponents. Her record-breaking run earned her both the Golden Boot and MVP honors—the first player in franchise history to achieve the double accolade.

Chawinga made her NWSL debut on March 16, 2024, in Kansas City’s inaugural match at CPKC Stadium, playing a pivotal role in the team’s thrilling 5-4 victory over the Portland Thorns. She provided the decisive assist for Alex Pfeiffer’s first professional goal. Just two weeks later, on March 30, she netted her first NWSL goal in the Current’s 4-2 win over Angel City FC. Her first multi-goal performance came on April 20 against Bay FC.

One of Chawinga’s most remarkable feats began with a two-goal performance against Seattle Reign on June 9, igniting an eight-match scoring streak that lasted until September 7. She continued her goal-scoring dominance into the postseason, scoring in six straight matches, including a two-goal performance that helped Kansas City clinch the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup against NJ/NY Gotham FC. By season’s end, Chawinga tallied 20 goals and six assists, earning four NWSL Best XI of the Month selections.

Currently, Chawinga and the Kansas City Current are in Irvine, California, for preseason training. The team will briefly return to Kansas City from February 6–16 before heading to Florida to wrap up preseason preparations.

To celebrate Chawinga’s contract extension, the KC Current Team Store is offering a special gift for fans. Starting Wednesday, supporters can receive a free limited-edition TeMVP poster with qualifying purchases, available in-store and online while supplies last. The artwork features Chawinga poised to score, with defenders from every NWSL team in pursuit—symbolizing her dominance over the league.

“Temwa brings so much to the team both offensively and defensively,” said Carducci. “She is an incredible player, an incredible person and a cornerstone of this organization.”

Additionally, a limited number of single-match tickets for the 2025 regular season will go on sale to the general public starting January 30. Fans looking for the ultimate game-day experience can join the Current Club, a premier membership program that grants priority ticket access, exclusive gifts, special discounts, and behind-the-scenes content. Season Ticket Members for 2025 are automatically enrolled at no extra cost.

“This year, we hope to bring the trophy home for the fans, for KC,” said Chawinga. “My team has been good to me and they treated me well last season. My teammates are kind, my coach is amazing, and my KC community has been incredible. All the support, it feels like home here, that’s why I decided to extend my contract with the KC Current.”

With Chawinga locked in and momentum building for the upcoming season, the Kansas City Current is set to make another thrilling run in the NWSL.
